Guest Post on Amish Wisdom

I wrote a guest post for Amish Wisdom's "Cook's Corner" that was posted today. I hope you'll click on over and read about the inspiration behind my summer fruit pies and maybe even test my recipe for peach pie.

Here is an excerpt:

I did help Clara out, that day and many other Saturdays. I learned a lot from her. She showed me what a normal and happy family in the community looked like. She and her husband, Olin, took me to the grocery store for the first time in my life. She taught me how to make frosting from powdered sugar, and use a pie blender to make pie crusts.

I will be responding to messages there and here on my own blog. I hope to hear from you.

I wouldn’t last long in an Amish community given that I can’t eat sugar and white flour. All sounds delicious, though. My mouth is watering reading the descriptions. Looking back, I can see I had an Olin Clara in my life. The experiences didn’t stand out like yours did at the time, but in retrospect I can see that the safety I felt with her made a difference. I call her my second mother now.

Johanna, isn’t it nice to have someone who loves you unconditionally? I’m happy that you have a second mother.

Sorry to make your mouth water when you cannot have such food.

Thank you for stopping by and I wish you a good weekend.

I love this post. It is about the best Peach Pie but it is also about Olin Clara seeing the needs of a little Amish Girl.

I know, Katie. I have such fond memories of Clara, and this was a good way to give a tribute to her.

I remember reading about your encounters with Clara in your book. I love people like her; kind, cheerful, so full of love. What a blessing to have had her be a part of your life.

Fran, you are right, I am blessed to have had Clara in my life. And you described her well.

Thank you for your comment, and have a wonderful weekend.

What a wonderful story Saloma. But isn’t that what life is, just one long story? The happy and the sad parts!

    • Saloma Furlong on August 30, 2015 at 2:08 am

I agree, Tom. Working through our struggles is what makes us appreciate the happy times, don’t you think?

Always good to hear from you!

I love that part in your book where you describe your memories of Olin Clara. Everyone should have a Olin Clara making a difference in our lifes…
