The End of a Trip and a New Home
In my last post, I promised to publish more photos from our trip. I’ll start with our visit with David’s cousin, Mary and her husband, Jere in their home in Los Angeles.

Jere is a musician, and Mary, David, and I went to one of his gigs while we were there.
Jere is the guy on the far right with the yellow steel guitar.
Mary took us to the Gamble House (as in Proctor and Gamble) in Pasadena. She is a board member for this house museum, which was designed in the Arts and Crafts style by brothers Charles and Henry Greene in 1908. I did not get a good outside photo, so this one comes from here.

I love Arts and Crafts style homes, so I took way too many photos. Here are several.

The furniture was all custom designed for the house. The beams show how there are no sharp edges. That is a theme throughout the house and in all the furniture.
Soft lighting was another theme in this house museum.
This is taken on the second floor, looking at the stairs to the third floor.
An outside photo. The beams have no sharp edges. The philosophy behind this choice is that sharp edges are not found in nature.
All too soon, it was time to take our leave from Mary and Jere. Mary kindly drove us to the train station.
In my last post, I included photos from our trip up the coast to Emeryville on the Coast Starlight. However, I did not include our time with Eythana Miller in Berkeley, my co-worker at ADSF. We walked on the campus of Berkeley and went up the tower at the top of a hill that serves as a lookout to see as much of San Francisco as possible. However, we could not see the Golden Gate Bridge because of the fog. They have a name for the fog — Carl. Still, it was a great place to see all around.

Eythana kindly was both our overnight host and our friendly transport to and from Emeryville when we got off the train, and again to board for our much-anticipated trip on the California Zephyr. Below are several photos between Emeryville and the beautiful town of Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

For a long time we were following along the same pass as I-70, which you can see in this photo.

We followed along the Colorado River for many miles. At some point I spotted a herd of elk cooling their heels in the river.
Beautiful Glenwood Springs, Colorado. I regret that we didn’t swim in the hit springs. The cost is prohibitive.

We were told that the scenery between Glenwood Springs and Denver is some of the most spectacular on any Amtrak train. Our train was eight hours late, so by the time all had boarded, it had gotten dark. Now we were passing through the most dramatic countryside in the darkness. I was so incredibly disappointed. It makes me want to go back and take that trip another day. If only it weren’t so far away…
It has taken me too long to finish updating you on our trip. At a later time I will write about settling into our new home in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Tomorrow it will be a month since move-in day, and we are slowly settling in. Physically we settled in pretty well, but we do forget, in all our many moves, how much effort it takes to make all the address and bank changes, and how it takes time until a new place feels like home. More about that in a later post. For now I wish you all a wonderful week.
